While ET's engine unrealistic, so is ET2's. Real trucks aren't THAT slow.
I would say ET's braking is fairly realistic. A real semi brakes nearly as well as a car, they just can't do it over and over again without fading. One full stop from 70mph down a 6% grade and you'll need a good cool-down period before using them again!
I always turn down engine power in SCS games to make it realistic. Then dial down the aero and tire rolling friction drag to achieve a realistic top speed (85 mph or so)
